The To and Fro of Prof. Drosten

The scientific assessments of Prof. Dr. Drosten come and go like the tides.

As of November 2020, Prof. Drosten is of the opinion, among other things, that masks are useful, that the measures are proportionate, that asymptomatic persons should be tested.

In the podcast of 28.02.2020 he made a decisive statement:

The case mortality rate of SARS-CoV-2 would be 0.5%
Breathing masks and deinfection for the population made no sense
“The population does not have to buy breathing masks. There is no evidence for this. We have no evidence that this helps, and disinfectants don’t help at all.
Action would do more economic damage than the virus.

“In China, people will go back to work, and the isolation measures must now be lifted. Because these measures cause more economic damage than the virus itself. And now, where this happens, where thus extended vacations are past and also again one travels in the country, one will see that in China the number of the Neu-Incidents will rise suddenly again. That is quite clear.
The testing of asymptomatic persons should be avoided because of the danger of false positive results
“So we can’t test asymptomatic patients, even if some people are saying so in public right now. This is nonsense, we can’t do that. We can’t do that simply because laboratory procedures also produce false positive results. And so that is the problem of predictive value in test theory. And we get into big problems when we start providing laboratory tests to asymptomatic people without a very clear contact history.
Flu collections have been tested – SARS-CoV-2 did not exist in Europe before December 2020
“Several laboratories in Europe have already tested their old flu sample collections from November and December. And there were no findings. So it doesn’t look as if we here in Europe had already undetected this virus two or three months ago.”
